Basic suggestions especially relevant for human rights defenders at risk. Before contacting the mandate with sensitive information, read these guidelines.
Email communication
Use a secure email service like ProtonMail or Tutanota instead of Gmail or Hotmail.
Access your email from a Wi-Fi network other than your home or office network.
Don’t use your organization’s email if it might be monitored.
Create a new email account specifically for this contact if the case is high-risk.
Avoid mentioning real names in the email subject line.
Identity protection
You can submit information anonymously or under a pseudonym if the case requires it.
Clearly indicate if you do not want your identity mentioned in any public document.
The mandate will not disclose your identity without your explicit consent.
If you represent a victim, ensure you have their written consent.
